Just given a 5hp Montgomery Ward Sea King mdl.#GG9001B, serial#55X596982,figure it's a Gale from other post, need info on what year it is and what model OMC's parts would interchange if any. Also this motor has no shifter, does that mean it's a direct drive? Motor is complete and the piston is'nt stuck but sounds like rust in the fuel tank, any suggestions on treating rust in tanks? What kind of compression should I look for in this motor? Last, does this mdl. have the wobble or rotor type water pump? Sorry for long post and all the questions, thanks for any info or comments on this motor.

Re: 5HP Sea King questions

Your motor is a 55 straight drive. Gale number is 5S12 it does share ignition parts with E/J motors of similar years.
Carbs, power head, leg etc. are unique to the Gale production. It does share these parts with the many private label motors built by Gale.Champion J6C plug set at .030,points set at .020.If coils are original they are most likely shot. They are readily available from the E/J application.

Good advice in former post. You can get several tank cleaners that will knock out the rust...do a web search for gas tank cleaning or gas tank restoration. There's also several liquid products that reseal tanks...make sure you get one that is alcohol proof just in case they mix/sell ethanol-blended gas in your area. Restoring the tank isn't hard to do, but does take a small time investment. Could have either type impeller, only way to tell is to take a look. The wobbler type impeller will be in behind the prop, the vaned impeller will be up above the prop in the LU housing.

Got another 5HP. Sea King. Montgomery Ward Model 15GG-9015 Serial # 396597. Would appreciate a date so we can figure out the fuel mixture. This motor hasn't been started for 20 or more years. Thanks. judson

Bad form to hijack a posting also confusing.Your Gale equivilent is a 51 5D10,
It to shares ignition parts similar to the 5S12.It has a neutral shift lever.
Same tune specs. Fuel mix is 16:1 use TCW3 rated oil.Don't skimp as these motors have all friction bearings.(bushings).

Thanks for all the info. Pulled a side cover yesterday, everything looks original so far, actually have good spark to one cylinder! Want to pull starter and fuel tank to get in deeper.Should I expect any surprises or loose parts falling out with the starter? This motor has been sitting in a barn I know for over 30 yrs but I believe with a little work and cleaning it may actually come to life. Again, thanks for the information.

Re: 5HP Sea King questions

Spark on one jug is a good sign. You'll have to pull the recoil, side covers and gas tank to get to the flywheel. It may have a small hinged plate covering an inspection port on the top of the flywheel. If it does you can swing the plate away from the hole/port and shine a flashlight under the flywheel and inspect the points/coils/condensors. If the coils are cracked, it's time for a tune up kit. It's one of many models that use the universal magneto...you can get a kit with points/coils/condensors for $75 or less. If you don't have at least 65 lbs. of compression, preferably higher, in each jug in a dry compression test you might be wasting your time.

Re: 5HP Sea King questions

Brand new to site and looking for someone who can send or post a picture of a 1954 Sea King (Montgomery Ward) 5 hp motor with original paint color and decals. I just bought one as a kicker for my bass boat. It is in good working order but looks like crap. Would like to restore to original paint. I have looked all over the internet for a source of decals, so if anyone can tell me where these might be found or ordered I would greatly appreciate it. I am new to all of this. Deb
