6.2L MX MPI Stalls when shifting out of gear

At the beginning of the season, I had my boat re-powered with a used 6.2L MX MPI engine. Part of this was also a new transom plate, gimbal, lower unit shift cable and bellows.
However, a problem I have been running into is that the engine stalls about 75% of the time when shifting from gear into neutral.
Im assuming the new lower shift cable might be out of adjustment?
Maybe the upper shift cable from controls needs to be replaced?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Adjust the shift interrupter switch first, and if that doesn't work you probably need a new switch

There are 2 bolts holding the plate, one of them allows it to pivot

You are shifting quickly, right not slow?

Looks like they changed the bracket. My only defense is I didn't have your serial number so didn't even try to look it up, but probably would have found it if I tried without

Guess it's just the switch now since it does it F to N or R to N

Maybe I should try loosening the screws and moving the switch a bit back from the activating lever?

The bracket should move easy when shifting under load and spring back quick as soon as the motor starts to stumble. If bracket is free to move then most likely its the switch

or bad/misadjusted cable. I'd still start with the cable.

make sure it moves with zero resistance. doesn't take much drag on the cable to screw things up
Will do.

I can do that in the water, correct?

If there is, what is the solution? I would be surprised because the lower cable is brand new.

yes. who did the install? what brand cable? it can bind if not routed correctly, and any kink in the outer housing will ruin the cable. either way, it's an easy for step to check

Same mechanic that installed the transom plate, gimble and engine. The cable is SEI.

Where should I be checking for binding?
