Good afternoon all! Just aquired a running (but running hot) 6hp. Fellow I got it from said he put an impeller in it about 3 weeks ago but there is no "mist" or hint of water coming out of the port on the leg. However there is exhaust coming out, so the hole isn't plugged. Any thoughts?

Thoughts: He didn't get the water pickup tube into the pump housing, the passageway between the pickup tube and block is plugged, the block is plugged, the head is plugged. (water passageways are plugged, that is) Now, the 68 6hp has a thermostat, so my guess would be your 66 (I believe) should have one as well. You can remove the thermostat cover, take out the thermostat and take a peek and see if it looks plugged. I've also removed the thermostat, and left the cover off and started the engine to see if water pumped up into it before, but I have to shut it right down after I see water because it goes _everywhere_

Thanks cr9c1 for the input. I got the head off last night to check passages. All were clean and clear. T-stat has already been removed. I will be putting a new one in soon. Will remove lu this afternoon after work.

Be a good idea to check and make sure that the small round keyway in the driveshaft that goes through the water pump was installed. If it wasn't, the water pump wouldn't turn at all. Let us know what you find when you remove the lower unit.

Re: 6 hp cd23e running hot

Upon removal of the l/u and impeller housing, it appeared that the impeller blades were turned the wrong way. If I'm not mistaken, looking down on the lower unit from above, the driveshaft should spin clockwise having the impeller blades trailing behind. There was a lot of rubber piled up underneath the impeller from where the blades were worn down from turning the wrong way. I cleaned all that out and installed the new impeller. While the lower unit was off, I was able to attach a piece of 3/8" hose to the water pickup tube and easily blow air through it. Nevertheless, I hooked up the air compressor and blew air through it as well just to make sure. Keep in mind, this is with the head removed. Anyways, I put a new head gasket on, installed new t-stat and fired her up in a barrel. She is now spraying water like she should and after about a 20 min run, you could still place your hand on the head and leave it there! Thanks for your advice cr9c1!
