I have a 6 HP evinrude model no. e6rcud with no spark. I tested the kill switch to make sure it was not shorted and all is good. I was talking to a guy that "knows boats" and he told me to replace the power pack and timer base as a set because if one is bad the other maybe real close. Is this true? How would I test either of these components. I have been an automotive tech for 16 years so don't be afraid to get to technical on me. Any help would be awesome.

Re: 6 HP evinrude no spark

go to marineengine.com and find your motor..under ignition look at part #21..sensor..#29 charge coil..#11..powerpack...if you'll go to cdielectronics. com..you find a trouble shooting guide for your motor...a dva adaptor for your multimeter is required...but it is a straight forward procedure..in effect, you measure the voltage from the sensor/trigger to the powerpack..the charge coil voltage to the powerpack...and the voltage out of the powerpack to the coils....I'd recommend you make certain the powerpack is grounded and all the amphenol plugs are clean first..if it comes down to removing the flywheel, use grade 8 bolts 1/4 x 20 for pulling <remove the flywheel nut and the silver ring and you'll see these 3 pulling holes>
