Just bought two of them. one is green, the other is grey. engine covers white, one is the long shaft, the other short.
Im guessin they are both 70 something models. 2 cyl 2 stroke. both are tiller control.
they both run, clean lower unit oil, shift fine, start easy. bought them as a kicker for the old ugly leaky center console i run.
so, tell me about these 6 hp johnson sea horse engines? any gremlins? issues?
i see there are pre 73 manuals, and post 73 manuals. my luck i have one of each, :eek: Does the date of mfg. matter with the manuals? they look identical under the cover..
the price was right so no big loss ifin they turn out to be anchors instead of engines.
i do prefer the old school engines. simpler design, easier to do it yourself on repairs.
appriciate any feed back on these two engines.

Ok. the short shaft is 6R-74C the long shaft is 6R-71C. they look identical except for cover decals/lettering, color of body, and shaft length....

6R74C = 1974 Model...if the 6R71C could be a 6R71G it would be a 1971 Model...feedback....avoid letting them fall on the shifter handle < prone to breakage and pricey to replace >...starter spring is pricey....when in proper tune these engines can achieve a really low idle.... a little different setup in dropping the lower unit..don't expect it to plane the same boat that a 9.9 will...do well as a fishing/trolling motor...google ..leeroy's ramblings..omc related articles 6 hp. maintenance and repair

The big question, do I need two different manuels to properly service these engines, or are they the same.....? it appears that in 73, the rude mfg changed something as most manuals list up to, or post 73, They look identical, but no tellin what the mfg did in 73 to require a manuel change.... might be something simple, with the basics being the same.... but there in is the big question.....

I dont expect speed or power from these. they are 6 hp, egg beateers. nothing more.
plane a boat with a 6 hp...???? . ok. the boat is a 16 foot center console. it has a 60 Mariner as main power. the old 2 cyl yamahopper / made in j~ pan type. the 6 evenrude is a kicker, you know, slow troll, better then rowin if the 60 wont start { Im gettin too old for that nonsense}. and them 'holdin in the current times' when your over a hot spot but cant anchor up, and coming into the landing on the "York" when the tides low, there is 12 inches of water, and your still 100 yards from the ramp. . it also draws less water and can get me in to the shallows a bit better when im chasing down a noodle rig with a 25 pound catfish on it and he decides to go into the pads to **** me off. { the short shaft will, by theory, run in about 12 inches of water.}
Past that, its just one more thing to carry around on the fishing ventures....

Every model/year has a separate manual. I'm sure you would be fine with one for both. Best of luck. Rick.
