Hello , I have a 1977 6 hp Johnson with a little problem that maybe others have encountered...Idling, low speed, medium speed and full throttle work excellent doesnt miss a beat however when I throttle up I get some hicups when it reaches about 3/4 speed but once it gets to max I can go and go and not even a glitch , nice and smooth and tons of power...Sometimes it will hicup within a couple of seconds into throttling up but usually it happens when its near top speed. Here is what I have done with the motor..Installed new fuel pump , fuel hose to carbereutor, removed and cleaned carbereutor, replaced spark plugs with the recommended Champion L77JC4 and gapped them at .030..When I pulled the old plugs one was gapped about .035 and the other .040 so I thought at that time maybe this is the problem but not the case. I gapped the new plugs at .030 to the recommended specs. In addition I have a new plastic style gas tank, hose and primer bulb ( a good one ). Once I prime up the bulb it stays hard so no problem there and my gas tank vents properly..Now i should mention the boat I have not knowing if this could cause the problem or not but I figured I will mention it anyways just in case. I have a flat bottom punt with a square front and even though its not really made for outboard motors the guy that built the boat said I could use a motor on it, I would just need to adapt the transom to get the proper height which is what I done..The boat handles better then I thought it would, drives straight, planes great, turns great and zips along..I have the cavitation plate lined up with the bottom of the boat as that is what im told where its suppose to be....Anyways something else I want to mention and that is when I throttle up in the beginning the motor will give out a "how do I say it" a hollow like gargling sound until it starts to level off then that sound goes away and its all motor sound...Is this normal to happen or if its not what causes this and could this be a contributing factor to this hicup issue? One more thing I have tried and that is adjusting the low idle mixture to see if that made a difference to the problem but it did no. Want to mention though that when I turn it out 3/4 to 1 1/4 turns it runs quit smooth on low speed, is it ok to only be out a turn or 3/4? I hear from some it should be about 1 1/2 turns but with mine it doesnt run as nice out 1 1/2 turns so not sure on that.
Thanks very much , I look forward to reading your responses.
