I inherited a 6HP merc, white colored. Should water be coming out of it somewhere when its idling? I am running it in a tub, and I see water coming out of a little hole on the side and another hole in the back of the engine when it is running at a higher engine speed. does this sound correct? I does not seem to overheat.

Re: 6 hp merc water pump

Welcome to iboats. The impeller should be replaced.
If water is comming from the teltale (that small hole in the side, under the right side of the cowl), it's fine. But if it quits at idle, it must be replaced, as it has "taken a set". This happens when the motor has sat unused for a season or so, and the rubber impeller shapes iitself to the shape of the concentric pump housing.
It will look fine when you remove it except for a slight bend in the vanes. It will werk for a short time, and then desintegrate, with all the pieces ending-up inside the block and head, in the cooling circuit...Not good.
but those are really great old motors.
