6 hp won't run

My six starts with a pre-mix and then dies after a few seconds. I changed the fuel pump, put on a carb kit and it still dies. I also noticed this (1969) has no thermostat (missing). Would that make it die?

Did you check your points?<br />is there spark after it dies?

No.Thermostat controls motor temperature only.The motor will not reach its optimum temp. range and waste gas,run crappy,etc but it will run.Do a compression test first.Did you prime the bulb?Make sure the primer bulb on fuel line is firm and stays firm.Make sure the fuel tank vent is open.
