'60 40 horse Lark II - replaced coils. How do I set the gap & what should it be?

I pulled the flywheel (with GREAT effort) and replaced the 2 coils. How do I set the gap for these coils? What is the setting? I set the gap for the points at .020. There is a hole on top of the flywheel. I assume that I adjust the gap for the coils through this hole once the flywheel is set back in place. Is this correct?
Thank you, Scott

To adjust coils: A special ring tool is requiered that fits down over the armature plate. This tool will properly locate the coil in relation to the flywheel. Install this special tool over the armature plate. Push outward on the coil and secure the two outer screws.

This is a 1960 model. All I do is make sure the coil is flush with the mounting boss. If it sticks out too far, it will hit the flywheel, if it's in too far, spark could be erratic. I'm sure there are pictures posted here to show proper position.

Thanks for the responses. A "special tool" sounds expensive. I took lindy46's advice - I appreciate the help. I still don't have spark. Still working on it. Fortunately someone put the electric schematic on this forum. I printed it off and hope to put it to use tomorrow. Can't wait to get this old Lark going.

No spark- there should be 2 black wires coming from the flywheel, these are usually connected to a key switch or a momentary switch to kill the motor, disconnect them and try again. Did you adjust the points to 20 thou, get each point to open at the highest point on the cam and set them? Are they new?

Thanks for all the replys. I finally have spark! Now on to the carb. This is something else that I know nothing about.

And how did you fix it?

A friend helped me out. We used 2 calipers. 1 to make sure that our spacing was even and another to measure off of the diviot in the center shaft to make sure that we were concentric. I really don't know how else to explain it. Fortunately my friend is a mathmetician and a patient perfectionist. He thought it over and came up with this plan, and it worked! As we were doing it my step father called with a plan. It had to do with a wood lathe and 2 separate cuts. He tried explaining it over the phone. When I see him this weekend I will get the fuller details. He got the idea from his son who runs a boat repair shop out of Key West, FL. I will post his thoughts once I figure out what he was saying. I wouldn't mind turning that jig for future use since my friend is only visiting from Cal. and I won't have him around to help me out.

Send me a private post with your email address and I'll send you a copy of the manual for your motor. It has pics and all the specs.
