Here's the compressor I'm hooking up, finally. 1st pic shows the whole unit. I'm in mockup stage. I'll be putting a shutoff valve between the tank and the filter. Question is about the filter. First of all, the instructions are useless. The first canister is a filter, then the regulator and finally the oiler. The oiler is where the question is. I'm assuming the oiler is to lube the air tools. Takes the place of of using a couple of drops in the tool before using. But, wont it oil the inside of the air hose too? I'm assuming that would be a bad thing if I ever wanted to attach a spray gun? Can I just use the oiler as a second filter? Or, am I completely off base in my thinking? I forget what was discussed since it's been awhile since I purchased this equipment.

Yes it will spray a fine fog of oil through the lines so don't use it when using a spray gun. Just tee off between the regulator outlet and the inlet to the oiler and use that port for the paint gun.

Not really sure there is a Tee fitting between the filter and the oiler. I have almost the same model and it's strictly a screw in tee handle to adjust output pressure.

If you want to use a spray gun, the easiest thing to do is have an extra hose that you hook up right to the tank at the quick connect fitting. Use one of the little orange inline filters at the gun for particle filtration. If it's easier, install a dual quick connect fitting at the tank now and you won't have to unhook the other line when you need the spray gun.

As bigdee said.Unscrew the oiler, put in a 2" nipple (to clear the gauge),a tee with a quick disconnect(for painting),another nipple, and then the oiler with a quick disconnect for air tool use. But,as Fireman431 said, you will still need a different hose that is oil free for painting.

Bag the oiler. A couple of drops in the air tool before using it is much better tool protection and you won't end up with oily air lines. The water trap is the most important thing for both painting and air tools.

I agree with dockwrecker...don't use the oiler. You can leave it there, just don't put any oil in it.

Another thing...put the water separator downstream from the compressor. Its not going to catch any water there. The water needs to condense after it goes through a cool pipe or hose first. You also never want to mount something like that on something that vibrates like a compressor. It won't last long mounted like that.

As Bruceb said solid mount the water trap and oiler to the wall with a with a 5' to 10' coli of hose between it and the compressor this will eliminate the vibration issue and help the condensation needed for the trap to work correctly those oilers are a pain in the rear they always eventually fail anyway.

Great advice gentlemen. Now, can I purchase say a 5' of hose to go between the compressor and seperator, or, is that something that needs to be fabed up? I'm thinking about mounting the seperator on the wall between the garage doors. About the only place I can if I leave the compressor where it's currently sitting. Gives me good access to "stuff" outsided the garage. I bought a 50' hose for it.....

I have two set ups, one with the oiler in it, that is used for tools and nailer's, then I have another setup with a filter and water separator for painting, I just have to move the main feed hose between the two depending on what the task at hand is..

Unlike others, I have had no problems with my oiler, it has been working for several years now..

This summer I am going to re-plumb my system, so that all I have to do is move a valve handle to switch the air between the two, that way I don't have to remember to move the hose if I am painting something, one way will direct the air through the oiler system, the other way through the painting system..

Keep in mind, I have two complete set of hoses, one for tools, one for painting..

Re: 60 gal compressor advice..........

For me, that would be the drawback of having the oiler.

Bruce,

I thought it would be a pain, but in reality, have found it to be pretty easy to deal with, of course I keep my painting hoses out of reach so my friends don't grab one and hook it up for tool work.. Most of my painting hoses I have picked up used from painting companies around there that have gone out of business, I like to use the soft hoses that don't get hard in cold weather and just picked up to more yesterday in a 50 foot length for $5 each..pretty good deal..when you can find them for that cheap, it is not a bother at all..

I also use a hose reel like you have for the tool hoses, that is 90% of what my compressor gets used for, they stay hooked up all the time and the painting hoses are coiled and out of the way, until I need to paint or do something with a wood project, this summer I will be painting my boat so will be using them a bit more, I am also thinking of painting my truck..

I found that the water separator mounted near the compresser was not good enough, so on the long runs I have added another separator to catch the remaning condinsation.

(neighbour donated a bunch of half inch ID galvinized pipe that one of these days I will put up so everything is hard plumbed)

Re: 60 gal compressor advice..........

At least one of my nailers is an oil free one so when I am doing some moulding and switching between my oil free finish nailer and my smaller nailer which wants to be oiled, I am going to be maually oiling that one anyway. With my hose reel, I am filling the tires with that so I don't want oil in that one.

Make sure you slope that line properly and add a drop Tee with a drain at the bottom of it. A post a while ago had a nice diagram with a piping setup.
