60 hp evinrude backfire at idle

can anyone lead me in the right direction on this had carbs rebuilt year and a half ago engine has never givin me a problem 2 weeks ago i was in the water wot at 37 mph motor just died would not restart got towed in recharged batt change plugs now it has a backfire at idle.

If you are trying to run on old fuel, that engine will keep giving you problems. A back-fire suggest's a lean, or fuel starve problem. When you rebuilt the carb's, did you stay with the old fuel? If so! clean the carb's again.
