While testing my motor in a trash can 60hp/1967 I noticed it was sputtering at low idle. The carb has 2 adjustments. I was told that it was too rich (hence the sputtering) after clearing the sputter by leaning out the left 2 cylinders I'm left with a question. Is it too lean ? How do you tell ?
Problem 2. the left 2 cylinders are definately hotter than the right 2 cylinders which seem to stay in temp spec. I can see the thermostat at the back of the motor with 2 hoses one running the left 2 cyl and one for the right 2. Other than replacing the water pump and impeller/s (which i have no idea how to do nor do I know where they are located) can I take the left hose off and blow with pressured air ? Should the water passage be fairly easy to blow thru ? anyway of telling wether it's a blockage or if it's poor water flow ?
Thanks ! GREAT BOARD ! No way I could be doing this w/o it !

Re: 60 Hp evinrude help !!!

Yo! Mamma.....sorry, just had ta' do that.

First and foremost, get yerself a service manual. Makes things easier for the would be mechanic. Check iboats store or search for Ken Cook Co. for reprint OEM service manuals. Trust me on this one.

OK....second, adjustment of needles in a garbage can don't get it. Rig should be in the water and in gear at idle to do the adjustments.

Hot head. If yer talkin' about the left side while standing from the rear, these can run a little warmer than the starboard side (navy talk for right side). BUT....if you can't lay your finger on the flat area behind the upper part of the head for a few seconds, then that's to hot. Yer engine has two t-stats. One for the port (left side) and one for the right side. If the right side is feeling ok, then the t-stat for the left may be stuck closed.
At idle, the top of the flat area just behind the top of the heads should run about 140 to 145 degrees. You can lay your fingers on that area for several seconds before having to remove them.

Get the manual first before doing the operation. Six pack don't hurt nether. :D

Whar from Ohio are ya'?

Re: 60 Hp evinrude help !!!

Thanks ! I appreciate all the info.....I'm in Croton Ohio. Neat the Middle of the state. This week I'll get my numbers for her and hit the water !! The Service manual is on order. The fact that it has 2 T stats is making me feel alot better with the cooling. If it had one t-stat I was thinking i had a blockage. Appreciate all the info ! I'll try running w/o them for a run or to to make sure.... is that advisable ? Thanks again Jim !
