I am brand new to boating and i have a 60 hp i think 1984 johnson mounted on a 15 ft 1973 glastron tri hull i think open bow small boat motor is model J60elctb do i need the rubber wings above prop ? and will it hurt if they are removed? I have them but wonder do they install like airplane wings with curved surface on top or the airfoil curved side down. Sorry if this is newbie question. Sorry have second question about fuel oil mix on this 60 hp johnson model number J60ELCTB thanks for any help . I am going for my maiden run since friend installed a power tilt unit i found on this site . He removed those rubber fins and i think i should put them back on .

Give it a go with the wings off. Take them with you in the boat. If the motor performs well without them, leave em off. If it doesn't come up to plane very well, pull up to the dock and tilt the motor up and put them back on and see if they help. As far as installation goes, your right, they are like airplane wings and work in the same manner.

personnally i hate them. if it won't plane then find out why. you could be hold 500Lbs of water in saturated foam, under the deck.

Agree, run it with and without the foil and see which is better, if it works it works.

Also agree with the water logged foam, I know I pulled 300 lbs of foam out of my boat, ran alot better after that.

If you trailer the boat next time you have it out of the water get the bow as high as you can and see if you have an endless suply of water going into the bilge, if your foam is wet it will weep out for a long time and no it will never dry out if it is waterlogged.

As far as the foil it won't hurt anything on or off, if it works use it if not don't.
