I have a 99 Johnson 60hp, with the shift/speed control from 1981 ( dealer installed newer motor with my old control box)- he used an "adapter kit" /wiring harness to do so. The overheat alarm in the old box has quit working. Can I hook up a new alarm under the dash without opening up the old speed control box? If so, which wires ( by color) do I need to tap into to complete this installation ?

Let's guess.

Go to the head's water jacket and get the wire from the sensor embedded there. Follow that wire to see if it is the one that leaves the engine or stops at a terminal block and a different color leaves. Whichever, record the color.

Go to the control box and find the color and follow that wire into the adapter. That would go to the low side of the horn. The other side of the horn is connected to 12v from the ignition switch and if you can start the engine with the new harness then that part of the circuit is ok. All you have to do is follow the low side of the horn to the harness adapter and see how the two wires "apparently" don't connect to each other.
