Hi guys,
Well it's been a long struggle but the merc purrrrrs like a kitty. Hard to tell without dropping it in the water and under power but sitting on the stand it starts instantly and pours out a full stream of water. The switched wires on the switchbox was the main culprit. The man before me either dit it or some of his enemys. The manual said mercury embossed the colors on the switch box to keep wire problems to a minum and I thought..........hmmm and walked over with a flashlight and started checking wires and ah!! this ain't right. I numbered all the wires and put them back where they were but 2 of them were already wrong to begin with. Anyway all new pistons and rings and water pump impeller ,plugs starter selinod, starter drive gear, cleaned carbs, and ready for spring....... I want to thank all the guys who helped me on this project, you've been a great bunch......................Jerry

Glad it worked out. Hope it is reliable for you.

Run it doubled-up on the oil for a while with the new rings..... for them to seat properly. Avoid full throttle and heavy loads until at least 5 gallons of fuel are through....and until 10 gallons make sure you vary the throttle. After that.... you should be good to go.

Sounds like a good plan. I broke in my 150xr4 that way. It was new but pretty much the same as an overhaul. I won't be running this motor till spring since there is ice on the water up here, but it will be sitting on the stand in a heated shop so it should be pretty comfortable. I will now start putting a deck on the pontoon and carpet. That could be a cold job as the pole buinding where it is sitting is not heated. Oh well, I am retired and can pick the days I work and I have till spring or longer if I want. I will probably play with the rig till I'm tired of it and sell and start another project. Thanks for the support.............Jerry
