60 Mercury stalls when given throttle in gear

I've got a 60hp Mercury that is about 12 years old. It purrs like a kitten with the water hose hooked to it and runs like a champ in neutral. However, when you put it in gear when it's in the water, it'll bog down and stall if you give it more than 1/4 throttle. I can put it in gear in the driveway with the water hose and it seems to run fine, but in the water it just doesn't want to run. I had the carbeurator jets cleaned out and it still didn't fix the problem. Help, I'm about ready to make it a 60hp boat anchor. And I'll do it too.... Thanks

Re: 60 Mercury stalls when given throttle in gear

I had a 63 Merc 850 85 horse that just ran like a scalded dog, but every once in awhile if I hit the fishin' hole, cast for a half hour or so, and went to leave, my merc would do the same thing. Fire it up, ran fine in neutral, put it in gear, and it would idle along, but when I would go to give it throttle, it would bog pretty bad, and I would have to let off or it would stall. I never found out what it was, as I went through everything on it. I have above average mechanical knowledge but it just kicked my butt. In the end I found out that if I just let it idle for a few minutes until its temp came up, it was fine. Don't know if this helps you much. Otherwise, you need to check the usual suspects, like fuel flow, condition of fuel pump, fuel tank, debris in the tank messing up the float needle, poorly adjusted jets, ignition timing and advance, and so on. Good luck...

recurvetoter,

Try turning up your idel a little bit. When the motor is in the water if you put in in gear it needs a little more RPM not to quit. It is under load. Try that it might just be the problem Good luck

Now, now recurvetoter, don't get your knickers in a twist. We'll get ya through this.
Coupla things to try. When you're trying to throttle up and the engine wants to die, check the fuel priming bulb and see if it's hard or soft. If it's soft, pump it up and see if the engine picks up. Another thing to try, when the engine is "bogging down", is give it a quick choke. If the engine picks up, you're not getting sufficient fuel. If it dies, it's flooding.
Try these and letus know what happens.

c/6

Hooty
