Found this message forum while searching for repair info. I've been reading old posts for days now and found a lot of great stuff. Sorry if this has been posted before, but I could not find anything relevent to my motor. I just purchased a 1971 17'Starcraft with a 60hp Johnson model #60ESL-71C. It has been sitting for about a year and the water pump impellar is shot. I've taken out the bolts(4 short and the one long) and the lower unit is not dropping. I assume there is something I'm missing. Any tips on removing the lower unit for this model would be appreciated.
I plan on ordering a shop manual later today to finish the job as well as future reference. Would you advise ordering a manual specifically for the motor, or a Clymers type manual?
Thanks for the help
KarricK

Sounds like you missed the one under the trim tab. If so, remove the trim tab & you'll find a bolt underneath it.

Disconnect the two leads going to the lower unit (in the powerhead), and connect a wire or twine to those leads as a 'tracer'. That way you'll have something to help you pull the leads back up through the midsection when you re-install the lower unit.

I was thinking there might be one hiding there. I tried to remove the trim tab, but the bolt head has been slightly rounded by the previous owner so I decided to not pursue it if not necesary. Now that I know it is, I will have to use an easy-out to get the bolt out. Thanks for the help.
