hi everyone.i own a johnson 60hp vro 3 cylinder which starts and motors fine through ranges of throttle but does not wont to tick over.i attempts to tick over but its a very lumpy tick over and then it coughs through the exhaust and stops.i have been told that it sounds like the carbs are out of sync.can anyone throw some light of this problem for me and how do you sync the carbs as i have no idea.i have a manual but i cant find anything relating to this.after the outboard stalls it starts straight away.many thanks

Ahoy, Howsie.

Welcome to iboats. :)

The procedure you need to do is called "link and synch". It synchronizes the carbs and the linkage to the ignition timing. I suspect that your idle speed is set too low, or that it was set with no back pressure on the exhaust.

What manual do you have? I don't think I have seen one that doesn't take you through the link 'n' synch procedure. The best manual by far is the OEM Service Manual.

hi JB and thanks for your responce.
the manual a have is on a cdr disk that i brought off EBAY which covers all models of johnson large and small.when you say that the sink and link might have been set with no back pressure i gather you mean not in a tank or with the boat in the water?.how easy is it to do this adjustment and any ideas how.

What JB is saying is that the idle speed needs to be set when the boat is in the water, not on muffs. If it was set using muffs, odds are it will be too low when in the water due to increased exhaust back pressure. The lync and sync procedure is a fairly complicated procedure. Too much to explain here in detail....Best to follow the manual...

hi rick and thanks for your responce.this does sound a bit of a nightmare to do to be honest.i have looked at the engine and read some of the manual and now im more confused than ever, think im going to end up taking it to a someone who knows what they are doing unless this manual starts making sence.

Aw, poppycocks Howsie!

You are going to take all the fun out owning that old Johnson.:'(
Buy yourself a good original equipment manual and read it well. The procedure is not that hard to follow.
PS, you will be glad you bought the manual and happy that "YOU" repaired your motor yourself.

Regards,

Melvin

OBTW excuse me for butting in.

adjust your idle speed stop screw, and give it a try in the water.

you wasnt butting in melvin and thanks for your input and the link you gave me.the trouble is i have no idea how old the outboard is let alone the engine number as there is tag on the transom mount and i cant find a tad on the engine anywhere either.at a guess i think its about middle 80's but not 100%.i took the air box off today and looked in the carbs and it looks like there is traces of water in all 3 sitting on the butterflys so this may have something to do with the rough or no idle problem so the plot thickens :'(

hi tashasdaddy
i will give this a go when im back on the water but as i said to melvin in my last posting i have found traces of water in the carbs on the butterflys so checking this out first and see if this will be the cause of the poor or no idle.:/

Look on the casting holes plugs, some folks call them freeze plugs, some call them welsh plugs. At any rate, check them for engine numbers.
Sorry to hear about the traces of water. I hope it is not serious.

Re: 60hp johnson vro 1985 ish?

hi again melvin.

i will have a good nose around for some sort of engine number where you told me over the wknd and see what i come up with.the water problem is a bit of a worry but as you said before there good old engines so hoping for something simple.

hi tashasdaddy

thats the only place i can think where the water can be coming from is the tank as the oil reservoir seems to be water free.i will try another tank at the wknd and flush some fresh petrol through the fuel pipe.
