Does stator have 2 yellow wires going to the rectifier like my '86 175?

Sounds normal for an unregulated system.......... and that's why you need to be running a proper marine battery.

My old 83 150 does the same thing. I just keep the electronics on one of my trolling motor batteries. If it is really a problem, you can replace the rectifier with a combo rectifier/regulator. Kind of pricey, but will solve your problem.

I've replaced the factory rec/reg on my '86 175 with a 1 piece rec/reg CDI 194-5279 from www.seilermarine.com. Merc's design is poor. I had to fab a mounting plate for it to allow heat to transfer to the block as it doesn't fit where the old rec. goes, not too hard to do. This new system works great. Hook the 2 yellow wires in and the black & red wires give a perfect 14v out at any speed. Cost me about $89 + shipping. <br />Keeps the battery from cooking.

On long runs, over 16 V charging may cook the battery or electronics that operate at 12 volt.I fixed my 50hp by installing a combo rectifier/regulator as recommended by Mercury when I called them. The 50 also had an upgraded red stator insalled by prior owner which puts out 16 volts at all motor speeds including idle.
