Have just bought 2 Evinrude 4's, model 49B6B serial numbers B7240 and B7251 both of which I'd like to get running for next summer - they're Belgium built, can anyone tell where to go to check actual build year for Evinrude / Johnson? Also would be interested to hear the general view of these motors, whether reliable or not and anything problems that I need to keep an eye out for? One needs new pistons, are they easy parts to get? I have a '63 Lightwin 3HP and a '57 Johnson 3HP which effectively look identical in dimension, what were the major differences?

Re: 60's Evinrude 4HP

Thanks for the response, but the link to the archives didn't work...I managed to check somewhere else and found that it didn't exist. I suspect it may have been a Belgium only model, based on old lightwin 3HP parts/tanks. There is no integral pullstart or lower cowling though and the tiller is a U shaped tube running around the sides and front of the engine, hung on rubber bushes below the fule tank.

chirombo - Model 49B6 is a '69 4hp outboard. Model 49B66 is a '79 model if that other B is a 6. They sound like a pair of oddballs to me!<br />PS - The johnny-rude 3/4hp of that design ('52?-early 80's) were probably the best small hp outboards ever built.
