I know that I don't have much info but... I haven't seen the engines yet; the guy said he doesn't know if they run. Worst case scenario for both, which one would end up being more expensive? (estimate?) Was there anything fundamentally flawed in one of their designs? What should I check for on each one when I do get to see them?

thanks

Both are fine. The 8 hp should have more resale value. Parts are relatively cheap and available. The 10 hp may need more work. If it has the original ignition it will need to have at least the coils replaced ($40). Lower unit probably needs to be resealed too. A complete tune-up plus gearcase reseal will put you back $150-200 in parts.

The 10 hp also takes 24:1 premix as opposed to the 8 hp which is 50:1. The 10 hp may or may not need a pressure tank (no fuel pump) depending on the year. If its truly a 60's motor then it shouldn't need the special tank.

If the 10 is a 1964 or later it can use the 50:1 mix. The magneto ignition is also a lot easier and less expensive to maintain.

Both are (were when new) very good engines. All else being equal I think I would go with the 10HP unless I wanted to fish some "under 10hp" lakes. For those lakes it is a no-brainer.

We really need the model number of the 10 to make a better judgement.

I have both of those engines. I have a '87 8hp longshaft Yachtwin and a few 10's.

The 10's are easy and cheap to work on. I believe they are all 24:1 as they went to the 9.5 in 64 did they not (or was it '65 - I'm in Florida and dont have my books).

The 8 (and 9.9's) have an inherent problem in the cooling system. The upper cooling tube grommet under the engine collapses and you need to remove the powerhead to fix it. (which is a lot harder to do on the 8's than the 10's) I dont like that. Mine has a cooling restriction now and I'm assuming that's it. And the ignition system is much more complicated... when it last ran well it was a great engine though.

The bottom line is condition. And most importantly, compression. Then price. Rarely are the 2 the same price as they newer 8's had a much higher resale, so if it's cheap or similar to the price of the 10, be wary.

Evinrude made the Sportwin 10 hp from 1956-63. 1964 saw the introduction of the 9.5 hp.

If I had to choose one based solely on performance, reliability and ease of repair I would take the 10 hp.
