Hi all. I have a 61 Mercury 500,serial #1428216.
It's my understanding that these old outboards used axle grease in the gearcase. So my question is should I use axle grease or 90w oil?
Thanks,
Andy

You should use a marine grade of Hi-Vis gear oil in your lower unit. Wal-Mart carries this oil in most stores and it's a good deal cheaper than at the marine places. They also carry (at least in my area) Penzoil synthetic and synthetic blended TCW-rated oil and from what I've seen across many boat forums, it's a pretty good oil at a great price.

Mix 50:1 with regular unleaded gasoline and avoid alcohol-blended fuels. Your Merc won't like them!
