AS you all know i have a '62 Johnson SeaHorse 40Hp electric shift.

Motor has a nice whitish blueish spark, carb is cleaned, fresh gas and oil, motor turns over but dosnt kick or anything.

if i spray some carb cleaner in the spark plug holes she fires rite up but then stalls again.

What could this be? I already checked and didnt find what i was looking for in the FAQ.

thanks again, Neil

P.S. Could someone give me a starting procedure for this thing?

Engine needs compression, fuel, spark and timing to run. Sounds like you are missing fuel if it runs on carb cleaner.

What happened when you squirted fuel mix (NOT carb cleaner) into the carbs?

It sounds like you are not getting fuel into the engine. Clean looking carbs can be gummed in the jets.

Check your reed plate for loose/broken reeds.

Let us know what you find.

one last thing, can i run the motor out of water with the muff's on? can i put the muff over that one little vent above the cavitation plate? will that vent get water to the pump or do i have to run it in a bucket of water?

Don't use muffs on that engine, put it in a large trash can for test purposes.

Remove the lower front bolt from the float chamber, then pump the fuel primer bulb. If fuel does not flow from the open hole, check the flow at the hose connected to the carb.

If fuel flows from that open hole, either the choke is not operating properly, the carburetor is still fouled somewhere, or it is not adjusted properly. Adjustment procedure follows.

Plugs should be either Champion J4C or J6C plugs, gapped at .030 (J6C = better idle).

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Let us know what you find.

thanks joe for the reply, but where do i find this adjustable needle valve? '

is it that thing on the top of the carb that has little arrows pointing left and right that are labelled "rich and lean" and if u turn it to the left you are richening it out and turn it right it leans it out.

is that what you are referring to?

BTW: I did a compression test top cylinder is at 50PSI and bottom cylinder is at 70PSI. Low i know but atleast there within the 15% of each other.

alright thanks joe i'll give that a shot once i can get her to start.

BTW i picked up Type C gearcase oil today as well as 2 new Champion J6C plugs.

I will crank her up tommorow! Wish me luck.

One last thing, yes when i remove the float boal drain plug and pump the primer bulb gas comes out. I also blew compressed air through the fuel pump.
