I have a 1962 evinrude 40 hp. model #35531. The butterfly shutter in the carb only slightly moves from all the way closed to just barely open when throttle is pressed from idle to wot. I have read the manual for this motor and I think it is supposed to go all the way open at wot. Am I correct? If so, how would one fix this problem?

the manual will tell you, but there is an adjustment in the linkage that will correct that. without looking at one or a manual in front of me I can't tell you.

Re: 62' evinrude carb question

First thing is read the book. It should explain it. What it might not tell you is to disconnect the remote control cable and adjust the linkage on the motor. Once that is done, reconnect the cable, and if it doesn't get full throttle, fix the control. Don't readjust the motor to fit the defective control.

Adjusting the motor is a two step process. First is to adjust the butterfly pick-up point on the brass cam. Then you adjust the set collar on the linkage rod. The book will explain a lot faster than I can type it all out.

Re: 62' evinrude carb question

I ordered manuals for this motor fron kencook.com. I recived a evinrude genreal service manual for up to 1961 and a bunch of service bullitins specific to my motor stapled together. But, niether one address the linkage directly. I am going to order the manual from Iboats, but until then can someone tell me if the butterfly shutter should open all the way on this outbaord? Also, does anyone have any diagrams they could post here showing the linkage and specific parts on it?

YES it will open fully at WOT, but you need to adjust the linkage first as previous poster stated. Patience.
