I am working on a "62 40 hp evinrude, model # 35531. I have two manuals for the motor but niether go into detail about changing the impeller. Can anyone tell me how to change the impeller on this motor?

Re: "62 'Rude impeller question

I believe on that one, you need to remove the rear exhaust housing to get to the large vertical bolt at the rear of the motor. The housing is held on by about 12 Phillips head screws. Once the vertical bolt is removed, remove the plate on the side of the leg, held on by 2 bolts. Beneath that, you'll see the shift rod coupler which connects the upper and lower shift rods. Remove the lower bolt completely. Now, remove the bolts which hold the lower unit to the leg. Have someone hold the lower unit as you do this. It should now drop down and come off. Hopefully, the two brass water tubes will stay in the leg. If they come off with the lower unit, use a flashlight and push them back up into the grommets in the powerhead. The water pump housing sets right on top of the lower unit. Remove the bolts to get to the impeller, and slide the housing off the drive shaft. Remove the little O-ring at the top of the driveshaft to get the housing off. Replace the impeller with the vanes pointing the same direction as the old one. Make sure the key fits in the groove in the impeller. Replace the housing. Grease the splines of the driveshaft and re-install the O-ring. Installation is the reverse order of the removal. Make sure the shift lever is in forward when re-installing the lower unit. Make sure the water tubes enter the grommets on the pump housing when re-installing. It may take a little manipulating to get the driveshaft back in at the same time you are fitting the water tubes. Two people makes it easier. If the driveshaft doesn't go in easily, turn the flywheel slightly until it pops in. Then replace the lower unit bolts, large vertical bolt. While looking through the oval plate in the leg, manuever the upper shift rod (coupler) back down onto the lower shift rod by shifting into neutral. Make sure the indent in the end of the lower shift rod can be seen through the bolt hole in the coupler, and replace the coupler bolt. This is critical. Now, replace the rear exhaust housing and the face plate, and you're done. It's easier than it sounds!
