I just aquired a 63 40HP Selectric Shift model. Engine was super clean, well maintained...ect. The only problem was that the top cyl was not getting spark. I replaced both coils, caps and points...gapped them to .020 as the manual states. Now both cyl do not have spark. I disconneted the wiring harness from the engine...no luck. I also disconnected the vacuum switch...no luck...check plugs and wires....they are good. I have a donor motor and used that to test coils, caps and everything else I could think of...I have plenty of spark on the donor motor but when I install the parts in the good motor I have no spark. I also have taken apart the wiring harness and checked for open and shorts...all test good. I have also gone over the wiring diagram for the motor and can't find any real reason why the plugs will not fire with the wiring harness disconnected. Anyone have any ideas?? I am stumped.

Same flywheel on both motors or different flywheels?

Disconnect the 2 black kill wires from the points and retest.

Np, just a matter of working out the similarities and differences in the testing. Something is causing it on the motor you want to spark, can't believe you are swapping kill wires over when testing.

Well....after reading the manual 3 times....reviewing the wiring diagrams for several hours....I've been trying it all after I tried the obvious to me. I was about ready to swap over everything....lol

The donor motor is my fathers old motor....love it....we have had a few problems over the years and nothing we could not fix ourselves until it cracked the block....anyways this is not my first goat rodeo....lol....but this has got me stumped

Re: 63 Evinrude Lark IV Ignition Problem

The issues I had with the 40 we got running involving spark was cleaning and adjusting the points. The second issue was the plug leads coming out of the coils, we had to cut 1/2 off the wires and rescrew them into the coils but if you swap everything over and it works the only obvious difference is the wiring.

When you figure it out... I'd sure like to know how you did it.

I'm thinking coil laminate gap to flywheel. It'd be good to have the coil setting ring. Anyone know where to find one?

I'll let you know what I find. I too would love to have one of those tools also. Maybe ebay??

Did you check you spark plug wires? Also, see if there is any arcing. It sounds like something is grounding out. Also, did you disconnect the kill switch wires as someone mentioned earlier? If all else fails, try swapping out the whole armature plate assembly-points, condensers, spark plug wires, coils, etc. I'm assuming the donor motor is the same motor of course.
