Just bought boat. Ran it twice. Pulled lower unit and replaced impeller. Motor runs great. Thought it would be a great idea to replace gear lube. Removed drain screw and vent and all I got was a few drops of water :( Filled with lube and noticed that the seal behind the prop is blown out. My question is can an amatuer with limited tools replace this seal or at this point should I take it to a pro? Compression in this motor ranges from 115 to 130. I know this is a tuff question but how much money is worth throwing at an old motor before getting rid of it? Any help would be appreciated.

HV

P.S. Does anyone have a blow up of the lower unit for this particular motor. I have the manual for 65 and prior but it does not have the blow up for this motor for the lower unit.

Just fyi I replaced the oil seals and o'ring and it was a piece of cake. It took less then an hour and I didn't use any special tools.

Re: 63 MERC 650 Lower Unit

I purchased the seals from a local shop www.usboatworks.com

The 2 seals and o'ring plus gear lube was $29. When I asked for a quote on how much they would have charged to do the repair it was 4 hour min labor plus parts. They were very helpful with advice on my repair and I appreciated that. From what I understand they would have replaced some other seals but my lower unit no longer leaks and that was my goal. :D I am poor man and have a stingy wife.
