6302s Original Gas Tank - Is it vented?

Hi,

It would appear, based on empirical evidence, that it is not because almost every-time I open the tank I get a whoosh. It seems to whoosh out when left in the sun and whoosh in (maybe) after running the motor for a while. The latter is my concern - should I loosen the cap when running the motor so that I don't start pulling a vacuum? I ask because it seems like that is what is happening.

BTW, I just ran a longer hose to the motor so that I could put my tank in the front of my small (12') boat.

Thanks,

Wayne

Hi SeaKaye,

I read the thread and with the conflicting opinions I am still a bit unsure. I did do some poking around and think I may have found the vent - not sure though.

Thanks for pointing me to the thread.

The reality is that it HAS to have a vent. In the "old days" they just used the little screw on the cap...but I guess in an effort to curb emissions they went to more complex systems that only allow "venting" when the fuel is actually flowing.

Your tank has a vent; whether it working or not is another issue. If your engine is starving for fuel and/or the primer bulb is collapsing I would; in the short term, loosen the cap. And; in the long term I would repair or replace the offending parts.

Re: 6302s Original Gas Tank - Is it vented?

If it is the original tank, it is vented only when the fuel line is attached. The connector pushes in two little pins. One that shuts off/opens the fuel valve, and one that opens/closes the vent.

Furthermore, the vent is one-way. It allows air to enter the tank, but does not allow air (and fuel) to slop out of the vent. The one-way vent valve takes a small amount of vacuum to open it, but should not create a big vacuum which would cause fuel pump starvation. Yes, they will cause considerable pressure build-up if sitting in the hot sun.

Thanks folks for your guidance. I took the tank connector off yesterday and cleaned it as best as I could and I think I freed up the vent - F_R's info helped me confirm what I saw regarding the two pin valves.
Thanks again,
Wayne
