Took boat out a few weeks ago and everything ran well. Went out last night, motor started right up, put in gear and off we went for a 6mph ride then full open for about 10 minutes. Seemed "to me" that power was not as stong as last year and throttle did not have much of a response past half way when pushing forward but motor brought boat right up on plane

Slowed down, came out of gear into neutral to drfit into a fishing spot and motor rpm's instantly started to rev higher and higher. Turned off and when restarted same issue happen with out of control revving.

Motor is a 1973 65HP 3 cylinder. Model # of the engine is 65ESL73R.

Any ideas as to what problem could be and possible soultions? Recently replaced Head and Termostat with the the newer plastic thermostat type and no leaks although flywheel is now too hot to touch, actually hotter than thermostat covering. I suspect old termostat was completley broken in open position as it came out in parts so this may explain why flywheel was never hot to touch but can this have any effect on run away revving?

Any thoughts to help me dig into and reslove this issue?

A bad rectifier will overheat stator and make it hot to the touch. Check to see if on of the carb linages have slipped or came off..

So possibly two issues, Rectifier causing the Flywheel to overheat and possible slippage of one or more carb linkages resulting in the revving issue in neutral, correct?

Ok, this picture is on the wrong axis but if I am not mistaken the Rectifier is the cylindrical part in center of photo just above the "Vacant" slot, correct?
