65 HP Evinrude cooling confusion

I recently purchaced this OB (1973 vintage) . I replaced the impeller assy (after running engine in a garbage can filled beyond pickup with my hand on the cyl. head #@&*$ Ouch, too hot)

By the way, this engine does not have the traditional "tell tale" outlet. It has 2 exhaust reliefs just below the shroud portion of OB.

My test run w/ new impeller assy found that it would burp out a few ounces of water from the exhaust reliefs every few minutes but what has me worried is there is a steady stream coming from a V-notch on FWD portion of the housing where it mates with the LWR end housing.

I'm pretty sure I used sealing compound in all the right places, but I can't say for sure if the tube that carries the water from pump to engine set into grommet all the way.

Hey-Yalp. Any info. would be great.....

What

Rod Holder,

If the notch is what I'm thinking it is you're OK.

You're not pumping correctly. I would drop the lower unit again and recheck the water pick up tubes and the grommets they go into. Also, make sure the impeller is mounted in the housing in the right direction.

If all is OK there, you may have thermostat troubles.

Don't know if you had good pressure before the change?

Powerhead should not be that hot.

I think you did not catch the tube in leg when you assembled. The holes in front of leg are drain holes as far as i remember, and lots of water there can come from the pump when pickup tube is not probably installed. Dont run it before you fixed it!If you tilt up the motor when you engage the lower unit, you can see the tube hit the pumphousing.

Re: 65 HP Evinrude cooling confusion

Thanks guys,
I'm going to drop the lower end again to check that the tube actually set into the pump when I assembled it. It had a 3" or so plastic "guide" set into tht pump and I know for sure the tube made it's way into it when I raised lower end into position.

Maybe before I do that, I'll open the T-stat
cover, remove thermostat (which I had tested w/ the old pan of hot water and thermometer test) and fire it up to see if I can get a
face full of water. Which would be OK with me
if that means I don't have to drop the lower end.

Again, many thanks...........

Re: 65 HP Evinrude cooling confusion

Well, it started pouring rain as soon as I pulled the thermostat cover. The good news is that it was wet, where as before I changed the pump, It stayed dry. Also, there was a whitish/gritty material around the thermostat (not completly surrounded, but enough to tell me that there may be an obstruction somewhere).

Do you guys think it would be a good idea to pull the lower end and hook a garden hose to the tube that comes down from the top end and "turbo-flush" this thing from the bottom and see what comes out at the thermostat area. Once that runs clean, re-install the cover (without thermostat in place) to see if it circulates past that area ?

Whatcha think.........

I'm certainly no expert, but did own one of these engines (and wish I still did !) My 65hp never spat much water out of the exhaust relief outlets. At WOT there would be a dribble only. At idle - nothing, so I wouldn't expect to see a great flow of water out of there. The stream of water out of the v-notch on on my engine when it was running on muffs was normal. I'd follow Djohn's and G Dane's suggestions to locate the reason for the hot powerhead. Good luck with it, you have a great engine there !

Mike

Hey KIWI,
I thought this post got lost in the shuffle so I posted a new one "should'nt be coming out of there".
Anyway, I ran it without the thermostat, in a garbage can and with the new pump installed, there is complete circulation. In addition to that scary stream coming from that v-notch drain. You say yours only did that when pressurized from the "muff" method ?
This engine is new to me (and the boat), what cruise speed do you think I could get w/ a 16' fiberglass semi-V ??

Have a good one mate.........

I always used to think that the motor did the same when in the water, it was just that I could see it !
I had my 65hp on a deep V Fi-Glass 16' hull, at the very best when it was trimmed just right we got 38mph out of it. Fast enough in my opinion :) We used to pull up 3 skiers with that motor using a 17" prop. I've read your other post, didn't reaslise it was from you. I recall the other post as it contains 'another' masterpiece from Schematic !
