I just put a new control box on my boat and started it for the first time since last year.It will start right up and idle for about 10 seconds and then dies, then it will start back up.Also, when I put it in gear it will start to engage and then die.It is a 68 model and I am also needing to know where the water should come out and how long until it does. This is my first boat and I have not personally put it in the water. What is the easiest way to troubleshoot the fuel pump?I was told to mix it 50:1,is this right?Any help is appreciated. Thanks

crappie man, first, make sure that you mix 16oz. of oil to ever 6 gallon of 87octane gas.

Does the fuel ball pump up?
If not, then this could be the problem and not the fuel pump.

There should be a "pee" hole on the right side of engine if you are standing behind it.
It should start pumping water within 10 seconds or so.

Yes,the ball pumps up and when you pump it it will stay running. It runs a little rough and gas drips out of the carb.Is this a stuck float? What is the easiest way to clean carbs?Do I need to take them off and put in carb cleaner?I have fresh gas(92 octane mixed 50:1)and new plugs and wires.I am needing to know where to go from here? Thanks

cm- It sounds like it is time to overhaul and clean your carbs. Yes they will need to be removed and soaked in a good carb cleaning solution and if possible use compressed air to blow out all orfices. Recommend you get a new carb kit for each carberator and be sure and replace the needle and seat valves. I also recommend that you replace the impellar if you haven't all ready. If you do not have one now is a good time to order a manual on your motor, I prefer factory, but have seen good comments from others on aftermarket ones.
