My '65 Mercury 350 won't start in neutral but will start in forward or reverse. Once started, it lacks enough power to get on plane.

Have had it in and out of the shop since buying the boat in Feb. 2002. So far they have rebuilt the carb, new fuel pump, new fuel line connector to new tank and new internal fuel line, new points, new condenser, new plugs, new coil for the cylinder that loses spark.

Last week, after about six hours of work and 'trying everything' they report that it runs fine at speed but loses spark to one cylinder below 1000rpm and stalls. They wrote off the six hours they spent trying to fix it this last time and say they can't fix it!

I got about 3 months of sterling service from this motor before this problem happened and can't afford a new motor.

Any ideas on what may be causing this problem and how to fix it?

Thanks,

Surfrider
