No reverse at the motor or no reverse at the controls? Might simply be an issue of adjusting the anchor nut on the motor end of the cables. Disconnect the shift cable from the motor and see if you can shift it by hand. Spin the propeller by hand. If the propeller hits a lock in both directions, you've got reverse; spinning freely - neutral; lock in counter-clockwise and ratcheting in clockwise, you're in forward.<br /><br />If you can't shift the motor by hand, next step is to see if someone has previously mis-aligned the lower unit shift rod with the mid-section shift rod - a VERY common problem with older Mercs....<br /><br />- Scott
