I have a 90 (we think) 65 Evinrude that will idle all day long in neutral and runs great at all rpms.
Power head is rebuilt 105 psi x 3 , carbs have been cleaned well. Running now @ 50/1 no vro.

Idles in gear at 800 rpm but will only do that for a 5-10 seconds before is sputters and dies.
It will restart and idle well again but it seems it needs just a little throttle to keep going?

Should it idle well in gear?
Is it really important to sync the carbs with a vacuum guage?
Any other ideas?
Thanks

You could adjust the low speed jets on the carb. They could be too lean and therefore die at low speed in gear.
Also the idle ajust on the control may need to be increased.

Fixed jets, idles well out of gear but not under load without additional throttle (makes docking interesting).
Gonna try timing.

voodoo....Did you or whoever rebuilt the carbs, do link and synch when they were put back on?

voodoo,Here's one thing you can check.Put the controls in the neutral position and make sure that the carb link roller is "exactly" on center with the factory scribe line on the fiber throttle cam and "just touching".Once set ,the roller should be able to be rotated with your finger with a little resistance from touching the cam. There is a lock screw that can be loosened and retightened for this adjustment. This is a critical adjustmment as it determines at what point the carb flaps begin to open in relation to the advance of the iginition timing.Once this setting is established ,all three carb flaps should be just closed and begin to open in synch when throttle is advanced.

All three flaps also have a lock screw for adjustment.Couple of ways you can verify even opening of the falps at several throttle positions.I personally use an adjustable hole guage between the flap edge and carb throat ,beginning at 1/4 open position and fine adjust as necessary.Of course at full throttle position they will all three be basically opened horizontal across the carb throat.

The max advance was dead on at 19 btdc.. I played with the base timing with the light and could not get that sob to idle at 2 atdc so I put the gun away...I sync'd the 3 carbs and adjusted the timing by ear ,it will run around the lake at 700 rpm all day now and is smooth all the way thru the rev range.
Thanks for the help everbody
