Re: 650 four lower end compatibility
Prop is no big deal, just change it. More important is the type of reverse lockout mechanism that each motor uses. The older style uses 2 brass cams, with a plastic spoolpiece, which pushes on a brass lever assy which in turn pushes on the reverse lockout rod.

Newer styles have a plastic shift cam upon which the reverse rod rides.

These 2 styles of lower units will not directly interchange, however a newer-style lower unit can be adapted to the earlier motor by cutting the shift shaft to correct length, cutting a chunk out of the middle of the spoolpiece to fit, and grinding the brass shift cams to fit the newer lower unit. Note, if I recall correctly, I had to turn the brass cams upside down to work right but it's been many years so you'd have to check that out.

The older units, if they don't have an exaust tube, couldn't be properly adapted to the later-style motors which do have an exhaust tube. About '65 was the transition year if I remember that correctly.

Best way is to have the 2 lower ends off to compare and go from there. But don't worry about the props, with the correct thrust washers you can fit even a modern stainless prop to the old lower units.

HTH............ed
