i am having a problem with a 71 650. low pressure out the tell tale, it seems clear, no clogs, but when i removed the lower unit and hook the water hose up to the copper tube going to the power head, the water runs back down from the bottom side of the power head.

Re: 650 mercury cooling

After water has cooled the motor it runs out of the exhaust and driveshaft housing;
this is normal. I would check the waterpump's condition ie:impeller for the pressure problem.

the impeller is in good condition. do you think it is normal for water to run out close to where the driveshaft meets the powerhead. thank you

Re: 650 mercury cooling

Merc850 has it right. It is perfectly normal for water to be expelled from the base of the powerhead.

If you're experiencing water problems, first thing I would do is replace at least the impeller, especially if it's been more than two years since it was last done.

Inspect the wear plate and cup insert carefully. If there are ANY scratches or grooves, replace them.

Are you running the motor on muffs or IN the water?

I have never had good flow out of the tell-tale when running on muffs. Even with a brand new pump I get a weak flow, but in the water it puts out a strong flow.
