Hi all,

Picked up this boat with a 65273S. Wont shift out of drive. Electrical seems OK. Soleniods are moving and Im getting correct voltage for N and R. I pulled the LU and found a small broken plastic nub on the tip of the plunger. I dont fully understand the oil passages and where they run that cause this unit to shift, But the broken part i found seems like it would be plunging into a hole that would block passage of fluid. Can anyone take a look at the pics and see if Im going in the right direction with this. I dont really see anything else wrong. I supposed the oil pump could be bad but was hoping this little piece of plastic is my issue. I did flush the fluid a couiple of times and filled to oil level hole, w/ type "C", that did not help. Any help would be appreciated.

Thx

Your motor does not have a 1972 lower unit.-----That set-up was used on the 68 / 69 model 55 HP.----Post pictures of the oil pump.----Yes there is a piece broken off.----And a part may have fallen off and is stuck in pump housing.----Have not worked on one in a while.----I would have to hunt through some parts boxes or take a lower unit apart to refresh my failing memory.

The broken "cap", as it is called presses down on one of the valve levers to close off the oil flow and cause a shift.

Is he missing an additional piece?
Looking down into the solenoid hole on the LU, I see what looks like the end of a plunger or something....doesn't look right. Is that piece w/ the ball on the end supposed to be there? I've tried poking and prying a little to see if that piece would move, but it seems pretty stuck. Could that be the piece saltchuckmatt is refering too? kinda looks like a small ball end would fit into the plastic end thats broken. hmmmm....interesting.

I haven't gotten brave enough to try and pull the shaft sleeve and gears and pump out yet. I'm an amateur and don't have a ton of tools. I watched a vid on a tear down of one of these, and it seems doable. If i can conclude or get close to a conclusion that the pump is bad, i will get it out and go from there.

If there are any other pics i can provide at this time, that would help, let me know.

Maybe try a cleaned out shop vac and then grab it from there.

Or a grab it tool

its stuckkkk in there.... i will do my best to get it out.....hopefully the ball does not snap off.
Maybe you broke the plastic part off when you removed it.

I would wait for guidance from someone who has worked on these because maybe you have to pull everything out to access it.

I have never worked on one of these.

There seems to be some confusion here. The scan that I posted in post #3 is from the 1972 Factory Service Manual. The picture in post #4 shows the spool end of the 1968-69 motors.
68-69 does not have levers and ball valves. 1970-up does have them.

Probably need to get the plastic part out or could cause problems. Here is the link to the eBay picture I sent in post #4 but that was from a 68 or a 69 55 HP that was previously suggested.

I think I've sorted out everything can at this point. One last question.....is there a water peehole on this motor, if so where is it?

No tell tale. You will just see water coming out the exhaust ports in back.

Make sure your overheat alarms are working.
