I'm looking at this motor to buy and have a few questions.

(1) after looking at the parts diagram for the lower unit I notice the shift mechanism is similar to my 71 50hp except that there are no wires. it seems that they use a shift rod to operate the oil pump instead of soliniods, is this correct? and if this is correct then what gear lube to use? type "c" or 80w90?

(2) to check for spark do I have to have a battery hooked up in order to not fry the power pack?

any other info is also greatly appreciated:)

The shift mechanism is not like your 50. The '73 has power assisted shift that works on the same principle as the power steering on a car. Use regular gear oil.

You need to have a battery connected to keep from blowing the altrnator rectifier. The power pack is fed my mag coils, not the battery.

Re: 65ESL-73R some questions

thanks for the quick responce F R.
so could i just check spark by turning the engine over carefully with a pull rope? or will that be too much for the alternator rectifier to handle?

just want to know the condition of this outboard before laying down the money:)

thanks again

Do you have a spark gap tester?? Fairly cheap at auto parts stores or you can easily make your own, do a search in this forum. Spark should jump a good 7/16 with a strong blue zap!!

yes i do have a spark tester. this motor has'nt run in years. so i will have to check spark by pull rope or just bring a battery to hook it up and roll it over with. again this is a motor that i maybe interested in buying and want to know the condition of if before discussing a price.

Re: 65ESL-73R some questions

It has to be turning over at least 200-300 RPM in order to produce enough juice to power the power pack and produce a spark. Believe it or not, you can do that with a rope. I am not smart enough to sit here and guess whether 300 RPM can produce enough voltage from the alternator on open circuit to blow the rectifier. But what you can do is disconnect the yellow wires from the rectifier and go ahead and rope away.

At this time your compression test is way more important than the spark test.

F R and ezeke thank you for your responces

I just got back from doing some tests on the motor.
i was told that it has been ten years since it has ran.
she is asking $500

(1) compression is equal across the three cylinders ,90# each

(2) spark on the top cylinder only and there is brown goo coming from the charge coils under the flywheel.

But the worst part of the whole situation is the woman i am dealing with has just found out yesterday that the hospital cannot do any more for her husband that is dieing from cancer. this is definatly not the time to be bothering her with price negotiation. i mean what can you say to this poor woman? I feel so bad for her. i guess i will just forget about it for a few months, maybe more.
