65ESL73R crankcase seal

Bought a 75 65 horse. It was seized. Got it free, and started. Water in lower cylinder. 90 psi on all three cylinders so I plan on at the least, new rings and bearings.

Question is, does anyone know where to find the seal that goes between the crankcase halves. Neither Crowley nor MarineEngine.com even list it so the assumption is it can't be bought. It is #36 on the cylinder and crankcase drawings.

Paid $300 for the motor and would hate to think I threw that cash into the trash.

It is also possible that the spaghetti seal is part of a gasket set.
Some people assemble the engine without that seal, just using Permatex on the surfaces. http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-evinrude-outboards/sealing-crankcase-halves-sealant-1972-johnson-6-hp-461465.html
I have also seen that seal sold by the foot, for sealing older Johnson lower units. (I do not have the link, maybe someone else could chime in.)

Just curious, what bearing do you want to replace? Are they damaged, were they seized?

In the first place, your motor is a 1973, not 1975. So make sure you order the correct parts when you do.

Having said that, the crankcase seal strips are plain ol' spaghetti seal, and any Evinrude dealer worth a hoot should have it. It comes to them in a 50 foot roll and they snip off whatever they need. It is part number 309044 for 50'.

OK, it also is available in 40 inch pieces right here at iboats. Part number 18-2534. 18-2534 - iboats

EDIT: When those motors get water in the cylinders it usually is due to a warped exhaust cover baffle plate. They are notorious for that. Even the slightest hint of overheating will warp it and then the gasket will leak and squirt water into the cylinder, through the exhaust ports. That will totally destroy the powerhead if it goes on long enough. What I'm saying is that you are wasting your time if you don't deal with that warped plate. Just replacing the gaskets won't get it.

I know its a 73, accidently pushed the 5 instead of the 3.

With that said, how does one check the baffle plate to see if it is warped? I had planned on pulling the plate to replace the gasket when I pull the crankcase apart.

I am assuming that the rod bearings were seized or the lower piston was seized in the cylinder.....either way, I figure that replacing the rod bearings would be a no brainer since I'm pulling the pistons to replace the rings

Once the plate is out, use an accurate straight edge to check the flatness. If the bearings are shot from water (rust), the crankshaft and rods are shot too. Altogether, that means junk.

well, I'm not really sure what was seized. haven't pulled anything apart yet. Tried to pull the cylinder head but the bottom right bolt is seized. Guess I'll just pull the powerhead so I can get all the bolts removed and go from there.
