What common faults am i likely to find with an early model 67to 70 65 hp merc, I tried to take the head off and most of the bolts broke off,so obviosly corrosion is a major factor. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.:D

Yeh, that "head" you tried to remove is actually just a water jacket cover plate.

One major flaw with that vintage Merc is that all the wiring insulation tends to become very brittle and crumble off the wiring.

Most repair parts are still available, although getting harder to find. Replacement electrical system parts (switchbox, distrib etc) are VERY expensive.

Re: 65hp merc faults

that must have been one of those left hand thread motors from down under ... lol
remember everything turns backwards under the equator....

please give us the ser number and model for any details.
i thinks ya means the water jacket cover...
yea, i have one of them motors and i have busted a couple of bolts , luckily i got them out and replaced them, pateince, wd-40 and a torch helps , Although mine is a fresh water only motor (less corrosion).

It all depends on the total running hours on the motor, condition and previous maintenance
if it was or is a salt water motor, you now have a nice black anchor (in my opinion). the salt just destroys the aluminum in time.

if your going to work on the engine, you should get a manual FIRST.
then do a compression test to see if the engine is worth repairing and then go from there.
there are many posts on here from guys that really know their stuff , research your topic in previous posts before asking your ?? you may find the answers and you may find more things you have to ask about.
as to common faults ---
( some parts can be interchangable some are not, check carefully when looking for parts and part id #'s)

i have found .

i needed to replace all internal wiring (mine were completley rotted),
replaced distributor, cap , plugs and wires
switchbox
timing belt
all lower unit gaskets,seals o-rings
check for wear on the tilt unit. (mine is a manual tilt).
i have replaced tilt unit main bushings, lift cylinder piston bushings
a new tilt rod.
i have had and found a ton of help on this site, some guys will even send you details or diagrams on how to .
good luck
road.
