i recently put a 66 chrysler 105 on my 19 ft boat
so it has a tell tail that sputters. And after running for 15 minutes it produces alot of steam with some sputtering of water. what should i do? it does not seem to be very hot to the touch.

Also the boat will only do 30 mph i think it will go faster. i am sure i need to rebuild the carbs and my be a new propeller does anyone have any ideas i could do to make it a little fast i really want to at least do 40 mph
thank you for your time

No, If the engine tops out at 30 you probably do not need to rebuild the carbs. A good cleaning will probably be more than sufficient. 30 is respectable speed for that engine on a 19 foot hull and anything more will be gravy. With some modifications, maybe 33-35 MPH can be had but 40 is out of the question.

If you want to go faster, either get a smaller hull or a bigger engine.

If you can find a lower unit off a 90 HP engine up to 1978, that will be 2 to 1 ratio and will give you a couple of MPH more than the 1.7 lower unit that you have on it now. Any of the lower units up to 1978 will bolt right onto your engine. If you can find the correct sized stainless prop (rarer than hen's teeth but some were made to fit that engine) or a correct pitched BRONZE prop off the auctions, that will give you a couple of MPH more than the aluminum you probably have on it now.

If you can find manifolds and TC carbs off a Chrysler 140, Chrysler 125, Force 120, or Force 125, you won't gain a lot but may see a better hole shot and MAYBE an extra MPH or two.

In the avatar, that is a Chrysler 105 and on that 15 foot hull, it only tops out at 45--and that's with a better lower unit, stainless prop, bigger carbs and electronic eye pointless distributor.

so getting 30 with my 19 footer is good and beleave me when i say this i am just happy to be out on the water. but my prop has issues. and when i look at my propeller it looks like it has been ground down alot and not by a professional. and the carbs need a good cleaning because when i tip the motor to pull it out of the water gas pours out of the top carb.

and what to do about the steam issue. should i worry. it is still cool to the touch

I am not sure how long you have had your engine, but you should replace the impeller every couple of years or so (depending on use). If you hwave not done this in a while I would start there. Impellers are cheap, rebuilding an engine is waaaaaaay more expensive. Sounds like you are not getting the pressure enough to properly circulate through the engine. I could be wrong, but that is the first thing that came to my mind.

The idle relief port on the early (Pre-80's) Chrysler outboards did not emit a 'stream' of water. If you can feel a healthy mist of warm (not scalding) water from the idle relief port at the back of the leg, then likely all is well. A bit more than a mere mist would be preferable, but so long as the power head is staying cooled, you should be fine.

See if your engine is rigged with an overheat buzzer. If you can get one, use an infrared thermometer to see that the powerhead is remaining cool.

I had a 1977 (I think) 65HP motor, and once it wanted to overheat on me unless I ran at an idle. I had to idle home from across the lake. After buying a new water pump housing and impeller, I found out that the cause of my problem was a piece of plexiglas that got sucked into the cooling passages, and lodged just under the water pump housing intake - but inside the leg! Lodged is probably not the best term - as it 'floated' in that cavity, and when the pump was moving fast, it sucked up the piece of plastic, thereby blocking the intake. At idle, the plastic did not float up, and the motor stayed cool. I seriously doubt this is your problem, but I just wanted to mention it.

The 65HP had the water intakes on the sides of the gearcase in-line with the prop shaft, rather than between the prop shaft and the cavitation plate, which is where yours are. So that piece of plastic had to get sucked in real low and work its way all the way up to the water pump housing at the top of the gearcase housing.

The spray at idle from your motor's idle relief should be quite noticeable and wet - not just steamy.

i have both going on there is water at all times but there was alot of steam it was a cold day and the steam was very noticeable enough to where people were looking at us funny when i bought this motor the water pick up in the lower unit was plugged with bug eggs it was weird but it has all new pump housing and impeller and i stuck a hose on it and ran water through the motor my buzzer is not hooked up but motor is still cool to touch and i ran it for a least 30 min at just below wide open maybe i will try another impeller i have a back
