It is amazing how good it makes one feel when they've spent days working on a $50 motor then just get it to run... and a total rush that you can't get from drugs when it purrs like a kitten! You just can't put a price on that feeling or reward in just knowing you've conquered that monster! Reminds me of FINALLY getting my kids to behave when they were young.

I know the feeling all too well. I picked up two old beat up Martin's, a 60 and 75 twist shift for $35... I found out that a Johnnyrude coil will fit and got them both running! Now I've got 3 old martins and when they're running they are fantastic for a small john boat.... and the elation of making those old motors run is priceless.

anyone know what the compression should be on this motor? checked it earlier and both cylr were 76lbs..the pistons are only 1 9/16 with a 1 3/8 stroke...

That's good compression for that motor.

I agree. 76 psi seems pretty darn good. losnbama, I finally got my '66 FD-20C (20 hp) running like a top. Turns pout I had a slight air leak around the fuel pump. Got it fixed and now she's a screamer and get's me and my 14' tinny on plane with ease. Holler if you get stuck on your FD-19. Man a little 3 hp Johnson like this will be a perfect kicker motor to match your FD-19. I hope I can find a little vintage gem like that one day. I have a little 3 hp Gamesfisher, which although loud and ugly, has never failed to get me home again. Congrats again on getting her running losnbama.

JW Johnnys are probably the very best outboards to make you feel like some sort of magician when they start that seductive purr. Had and fixed a gazillion outboards but nothing ever pleased me as much as my JW-13.

HI losnbama. While you should do a carb kit, I had the exact same problem on my 20 hp and it was due to the air leak in and around the fuel pump. I bet there's a small air leak somewhere in the fuel system. Once I fixed it no more revving up and down by itself. great little motor!
