66 650 reverse not engaging fully

Ok, got the boat out on the water this weekend, found several probs. Think I got them all fixed but one. Even when the shift shaft is aligned correctly, Reverse won't fully engage. I have the LU on the bench, and with it shifted into reverse, I can hold the prop still while turning the driveshaft. I figure I'll be taking the LU back apart tomorrow. What all should I be checking/looking for?

You may have a bad rev. lock cam or improperly installed (misaligned) a lock spring with to much tension all of this can be ckd. with the unit in place by holding the locking dogs down and seeing if the unit shifts. As long as the cables are adjusted properly and the dogs are held down if it still don't shift you could have a twist in the upper shift shaft from being shifted into rev. when the engine is not running or a bad clutch dog

Ok, LU is apart, and the reverse dogs are rounded over pretty bad. Would it be ok if I took it to work and welded it up? Or do I need a new sliding clutch and reverse gear?

The easiest way to repair it is to use a vertical mill in just recut the engagement surfaces on the dog and the gear both if you have the machine to do it. don't try to weld it it will screw up the temper

I just now turned the cam to reverse, and installed the prop shaft. Holding pressure against the shaft, it looks like the sliding clutch only moves back enough to barely engage the dogs on the reverse gear. Is this right? I thought it should slide further back.

The rev. dogs have all been squared up, the L/U reassembled, and still no reverse (L/U off the motor, manually shifted into Rev). How do I check the Rev cam? what else should I check?

You should be able to ck and see if the problem is in the rev. cam or it's linkage by holding thr rev. lock dogs down and shifting into rev. There are 2 other things that can keep it from rev. gear a worn shift cam or follower pin that is worn were it can't reach rev and the othe is the upper shift shaft is twisted, if the unit locks up good when off the moter it's probable the shaft is twisted that happens when the early units are shift into rev. when not running the dogs on the shift dog and the gear hit one another and some thing has to give (the upper shaft is the longest so thats what twists)

Hmm, I guess I'll make a new follower pin. It has signs of wear on both ends. There's some 1/2" dia A-2 tool steel at work. I can heat treat it good enough right there in the shop (I'm a toolmaker). The shift shaft doesn't appear to have any wear on it. And like I said in a previous post, it doesn't look like the sliding clutch is moving far enough back to engage the reverse dogs fully.<br /> Thanks again, Laddies

After machining the clutch dogs, making a new follower shaft, and adjusting the cable.... I FINALLY have Forward Neutral and Reverse with no doubts. Thanks for the guidance, Laddies!
