Now would be a good time to check the lower for water. On the forward port side there are two screws, a drain/fill and a vent. put a catch pan under the drain (bottom), remove the screw and then remove the vent. See if you have water. If no water, use a fill pump and fill from the lower until it comes out of the vent. Replace the vent, remove the pump and replace the fill. Use new gaskets on both screws. I use Quicksilver marine premium gear lube in my '66 500.
