my friends powerglide went to tranny heaven yesterday, He needs a new tranny. I know the turbo 350 is a direct bolt in, whatabout the 700r4? I think it's a direct bolt in, providing the spedo is cable driven, how much work does a v6 700r4 need to stand up to the abuse of a nice 327? I think it's just a new converter. If anyone could verify please

A 700R4 is a 700R4 reguardless if its mated to a V6 or a V8. They had there share of problems, but if you get a new rebuilt one it should have all the new upgrades. They require a lock-up type torque converter and make an excellent swap from a powerglide and even a 350 and should be able to take anything a 327 can give it. He will get much better economy and thats a good thing now days.

Re: 67 ElCamino tranny upgrade

The only difference that I am aware of on any of the v6 700r4's, not all but some, is a different size bell housing. For example some of the mid 80's to early-mid 90's small v6 (2.8L & 3.1L I think) Camaros and S-10's used a 700r4 that had a smaller bell housing while the 4.3L had the larger. If memory serves me there are adapter kits for the smaller ones. I'm not positive on any of this anymore but something to look into before getting everything apart.

Edit: It may have been a 200r4 in the v6's I haven't worked on a rear wheel drive chevy in about 8 years.

The 4.3L is a V6 with the 2 cylinders chopped off. The V8 being a 350 or 5.7L. :)

yes, thank you I know that. the question was what you would have to do to make the transmission fit in the vehicle, and if the v6 converter would be strong enough.

First of all the 700 is a lockup torque, controled by a vaccum to electric switch which you will have to add to wiring, the 700 's main trouble is the pump so when it's on the floor pull the pump out and install two more vanes,if I remember right from 6 to 8,this is done so there will not be any fuild starvation when in lockup mode.Don't forget new pump seal, front seal to.Also you will diffently have to change or magjiver the cross member, plus depending on the trannie's tailshaft length compared to old trannie the driveshaft might have to be changed or resized
