I am new to boating so any help would be greatly appreciated. I got the engine (cd24) and the waterpump was not working. I ended up taking the whole lower unit apart. I got the waterpump working but now there is a problem with the shifter. It will shift into forward and reverse, but it does not "lock" into place. it just moves freely between gears. Im sure i screwed something up when i put it back togethor. any help would be great, im sick of sitting and staring at it while scratching my head. Thanks.

I guess by now you know that your didn't have to take all that stuff apart just to fix a water pump. But you will have to take it apart again. The shifter detent is a flat spring in the gearcase that rides in 3 notches on the shift rod. Actually, two flat springs, stacked on top of each other. They are held in place by a screw.
