Ok here it goes. I have a 67 Johnson 80 hp. I'm having starter issues as well as starting issues. I had the starter rebuilt it seemed to crank for a bit but then stops an just spins(no bendix or gears spinning) that is just the motor spins, is that an alignment issue inside the gear case? Secondly when I add a fuel mixture to engine an start it it spits an sputters then dies. It usually takes almost ten minutes to get started. Its along message and I apologize. Should I just take it off an replace it with a newer motor and be done? Thanks in advance!

Is this motor new to you? it sounds like the starter drive is kicking out just as the engine fires.I would try and correct the fuel problem, maybe carb overhaul, and see if the engine will run properly. Why did you have the starter overhauled in the first place?

Re: 67 Johnson starter and starting issues

I had the starter rebuilt because it stopped working all together. I'd turn the key and hear a click and that was all. When the starter cools down it will engage when it wants too. Its weird because it seems like its losing power. When I bypassed the solenoid it started to spin and then just stopped. I let it cool down an it went back to cranking then just would go back to free spinning and would slow down. Could a 650 cca battery be too small?
