I picked up a 67 Lightwin. These motors are new to me however I am pretty handy with small engines. I successfully brought a 39 Elto 3hp back to life that has sat for 20 years with gas in it. I say this because I didn't want the first response to be "Take it to a professional"
The 67 Ligtwin does not seem to be running right in the higher RPM ranges. I bought it knowing it would not run without the choke. Opened up the carb and found crud on the need valve and the main jet was clogged. I also found that the strainer was missing in the fuel tank so I put in a brand new Briggs + Stratton inline fuel filter (strainer type). I spent a lot of time locating all the circuits in the carb and clearing them by running carb cleaner through them and compressed air. Now the choke is only needed for a few seconds to get it started then it runs good in the start position which seems to be normal to me. It also idles well (after adjusting the slow speed jet). Pulling the choke stalls it now (used to keep it running). I am running it in a barrel. The problem is the "fast" position. It runs and will run continuously but, I can tell it has a lack of power and isn't quite right. If I partially cover up the end of the tube for the air intake baffle, it will clear up and sounds right. The kicker is, that it actually starts to run hotter. I had to shut it down because it was getting too hot for my liking. These two conditions seem to contradict each other. I figure it is running lean since my finger over the tube made it clear out but what confuses me is that is starts to actually run hotter when i partially cover the tube. I have adjusted the float level with no luck. I am beginning to suspect something with the ignition system. I am not really sure how to test this properly. I plan on pulling the magneto and cleaning the points and resetting the gap. What is the correct gap? I am looking for opinions, am I headed down the right path or am I overlooking something?
