68' 1000ss shift problem

I have read with interest years worth of posts related to this problem. You know the one "won't go all the way into reverse". Motor/lower unit have never been apart, I have adjusted linckages etc. my question is this:

how much play is normal for the upper shift shaft. How do the lower and upper shafts connect. I was wondering if there is a coupler for the splines that could be worn. The linkages rotate the upper shaft but i have to push it just a little extra to engage reverse. The end of the crank on the shaft has about 1/2 of play at the connection hole. The reverse lock does not have full travel either, it moves some but not enough to latch. Just trying to gather as much information as possible before removing the LU.

Sorry I think it's a 1969 1000SS, a family heirloom.

Re: 68' 1000ss shift problem

In some cases a bad rev. lock cam will keep them from rev. reach up under the lock assm. and hold it ingaged then have some one shift it while turning the prop, if it shifts it has a bad cam. There is not really any play in the linkage there is movement but it is not sloppy is has tension on it, the shafts are spined together and will rust but the most common problem is people shift then into rev. when not running or someones not turning the prop and it twists the upper shift shaft.

Thanks Laddies,

I already tried the hold the reverse lock idea. No telling how many times that motor has been shoved into go back gear, w/o any rotation of prop or drive shaft over the last 40 years. Is there a means of telling or realigning with out pulling power head to remove uppper shaft?

Thanks for the lightning fast reply, you are on top of it.

No there is really no easy fix, I know a few people that made tools out of old lower shaft to twist the upper shafts back it worked on a couple but most it did not.

Re: 68' 1000ss shift problem

thanks once again.

Ya I had that twist it back idea, but reconsidered. The other revelation I had is that if I had taken off the LU, reinstalling with everything in reverse, the splines would never line up. Do you have any clues where I might start trying to locate a used one? Or perhaps it twisted exactly one spline LOL.

Thanks again
Ron
