What is the best way to get the old seal out of the lower unit that is below the water pump wear the drive shaft goes through. I am getting alot of water in the lower unit and it looks like this seal is shot. I am not sure if I should just pry it out or if there is a secret. I think this is the seal, because even with just muffs on it gets water in the LU. What some other possibilities that I should check. Also if I put fresh oil in the unit and go fishing is it going to damage it until I get it fixed? Just checking, don't want to miss any valuable time on the water.

Thanks

Fishing Man.... I normally use a large screwdriver and pry it out. Just make sure that the leverage point is an area that will not crack or break off. You can also use a hook like device and a slide hammer to yank it out. OMC of course recommends special tools but they're not necessary.

If you want to find out exactly where that unit's leaking, drain it, then apply 7 to 12 pounds of air pressure to the lower drain plug hole (carefull you don't shoot the driveshaft out). Now, wiggle the driveshaft, shift rod, etc. Air, mixed with lube should exit out from wherever the leak is.
